More than a dozen severe thunderstorm warnings were tallied a large portion of the 24-hour timespan covering 2 a.m. Tuesday through today in south central Iowa. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on the air for nearly eight hours of that timeframe as multiple storms pummeled south central Iowa with strong winds, large hail, and torrential rainfall. Many locations received 4-6″ of precipitation with those storms, and rain gauges have approached 7-8″ in several instances since late Sunday night. Another chance for severe weather returns late tonight into the overnight before drier conditions are expected to settle in. A heat advisory is in place most of today, as heat index values will approach 110 degrees in the afternoon and evening.
