The Newton Fire Department is getting over $77,000 of new equipment for just over $3,700. The Fire Department has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA. The grant will help pay for three upgrades.  The City says the Department’s Plymovent Exhaust Removal System will be improved. This equipment captures vehicle exhaust at the source, improving air quality and safety. New audio-visual training equipment will be purchased to enhance training capabilities. The Department’s Firefighter Training Resource Library,  which is used to train new firefighters in basic firefighting skills, will also be updated. The City says the total cost of these upgrades is $77,076. The Fire Department’s local match is $3,703.82; the Federal grant covers the rest of the cost. Over the past 20 years, The City says the Newton Fire Department has successfully secured just under $977,700 in Assistance to Firefighters grants, with local matches of $56,442.
