Visitors to Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve southwest of Grinnell have been making use of a new observation tower and bird blind recently built by Jasper Conservation Connection. The tower overlooks the Preserve’s wetlands, prairie, and savannah. Jasper County Conservation says it’s large enough to hold a class of 40 students and the study of several ecosystems at once. The bird blind under the tower provides for observation and photography of wildlife in the wetland area. Jasper Conservation Connection and Grinnell College Center for Prairie Studies have also partnered on the purchase of a binocular that will be permanently installed on the tower. Jasper Conservation Connection is a non-profit group established in June 2005 to enhance the quality of parks, recreational opportunities, conservation, and outdoor education throughout Jasper County. It operates under the umbrella of the Jasper Community Foundation and accepts money from donations, memorials, and fundraising activities. Questions about the non-profit should be directed to Jasper County Conservation Director Keri Van Zante.
