The Indianola City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance allowing the ownership of chickens within city limits at their meeting Monday.
Emily Rizvic with Indianola Community Development tells KNIA News once fully approved by the Indianola City Council, there will be a permitting process that residents have to go through in order to own chickens, and standards owners will have to follow.
“They would have to apply for an urban chicken license or permit through the community development department. Submit a permit, we would go out and review that permit, including an inspection, and those approved would have to renew that permit annually.”
The proposed ordinance will continue to be considered by the Council and voted upon two more times to approve or deny the ordinance. The second consideration is scheduled for the next council meeting on September 3.
