A new Knoxville Panthers archway at Randy Wilson Track is expected to be built by Knoxville High School students.
At a school board meeting on August 12th, a proposal for a Panthers archway did not pass as the board was not comfortable spending the quote they received for just under $14,000 from Pierce Fence Company. At Monday’s school board meeting Business Manager Craig Mobley stated that high school industrial technology teacher Sean Sanger wants to have one of his classes construct this new addition. The students would figure out the cost estimate, work on the design, present their proposal to the board, and construct the new archway with materials from Weiler. The students also plan on building a ticket booth for Randy Wilson Track. Mobley said it is exciting for students to get experiences like this.
“I am absolutely all for it. I am so happy that we have teachers who are willing to take on projects like this, and involve their students, and get them working on it. I think it gives students real world applications that they’re learning in class.”
Mobley stated at the school board meeting that the cost of the project would be significantly lower if the students do it because they would essentially just be paying for materials. The official proposal by the students will be presented at a future meeting.
