Dutch Football Team Bags California Win
An 89-yard touchdown catch by Ryan Neu in the third quarter swung the game in favor of the Central College football team Saturday, as they downed California Lutheran 35-10 in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Leading 14-0 to start the second half, quarterback Brady Ketchum’s pass was tipped and intercepted deep inside Central’s territory. The Dutch defense held up and limited the Kingsmen to a 22-yard field goal. On their next possession, Central faced a 3rd and 13 from their own 11-yardline, and Ketchum found Neu for the 89-yard score and a 21-3 lead. Ketchum had three touchdown passes on the day, connecting with wide receiver Jack Johnson for a 13-yard score in the first quarter and Keegan Glover from 61 yards out in the second quarter. Jase Grunder led the Dutch ground game with 55 yards on 11 carries, and capped off the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. In addition to his five catches for 96 yards, Glover ran the ball 15 times for 44 yards and threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Meyer in the third quarter. Central’s defense limited the Kingsmen to 210 yards of offense, with all 10 points allowed coming off turnovers deep within Central’s territory. The Dutch defense had a pair of takeaways itself as fifth-year seniors Reece Miller and Austin Burns both grabbed fourth-quarter interceptions.
Central is back at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium next Saturday, hosting Wartburg in the American Rivers Conference opener at 1 pm.
Central Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Claim First Place at the Les Duke Invitational
The Central College men’s and women’s cross country teams each claimed first place honors on Saturday, winning the Les Duke Invitational at Grinnell College.
Dutch men’s sophomore Jack Brown won his second individual title in as many weeks, following up his Central Dutch Invitational victory with a winning time of 25 minutes, 58.5 seconds. It was all Norwalk natives at the top for Central as Donovan Card was fourth (26:07.0) and Derek Webster was fifth (26:19.1). Randy Jimenez was the fourth Dutch runner to finish, taking seventh overall (26:40.2). Two of Central’s top seven runners were freshmen. Austin Vander Werf was the fifth scoring athlete in ninth place (27:04.4) while Nathan Vander Waal was seventh for Central and 13th overall (27:22.6). Taylor Thunstedt was the sixth member of the varsity unit to finish, taking 12th (27:14.9).
The Dutch women’s cross country team’s victory was the team’s third consecutive Les Duke Invitational title. Peyton Steffen and Addison Parrott finished first and second for the Dutch, with Steffen grabbing her first collegiate victory in 22 minutes, 18.1 seconds. Parrott was second in 22:30.3. Steffen’s time made her the seventh-fastest runner in program history. Teah Miller and Emma Rocha were next for Central in fourth (22:52.1) and fifth (23:22.7). Freshman Peyton Madison was the fifth and final scorer for the Dutch in ninth (24:15.2). The varsity seven was rounded out by Sara DeHaan in 16th place (24:48.1) and Kira Hooper in 17th place (24:50.5).
Central has a long break from competition, next competing on October 4th in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Central Women’s Tennis Team Grabs Second Conference Win
The Central College women’s tennis team (4-2, 2-1 A-R-C) only dropped one match to beat Simpson College 6-1 in an American Rivers Conference showdown on Saturday.
The Dutch snagged the doubles point by winning all three of the matches with No. 1 doubles winning 6-4, No. 2 doubles winning 6-1, and No. 3 doubles winning 6-0. In the singles matches the Dutch got three 6-0, 6-0 wins from Becca Vala at #3, Emma Murphy at #5, and Emily Blom at #6. Jennifer Larson added a three-set win at #4, and the final win came from Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney at #2 (6-1, 6-2). The victory gave head coach Ryun Ferrell his 107th career victory, moving him past Doug Stursma to become the all-time winningest coach in program history.
Central travels to Truman State on Wednesday, before sending players to the ITA Division III Midwest Regional on Friday.
Dutch Volleyball Team Finishes Unbeaten at Monmouth Tournament
Wrapping up its appearance at the Monmouth College Tournament Saturday, the Central College volleyball team swept Knox College (Ill.) (25-14, 25-15, 25-11) before needing four sets to take down Westminster College (Mo.) (25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14).
The Dutch (8-4) had three players with double figure kills against Westminster. Paige Sexton led the team with 11, while Kaitlyn Koel and Gracie Pierson each had 10. Sexton notched a double-double by adding 10 digs. Colleen Kenney led the team with 17 digs in each match. Avery Rexroat had 30 set assists against Westminster and 10 against Knox. Makayla Ribble had 20 in the Westminster match and 12 against Knox. Kenney added four service aces against Knox and Pierson had three against Westminster. Central had eight blocks against Westminster, including four solos from Landry Pacha.
The Dutch travel to La Crosse, Wisconsin next weekend for three matches at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Invitational.
Central Men’s Soccer Team Shutout on the Road
The Central College men’s soccer team competed with NAIA’s Dordt University Saturday and were unable to score in a 1-0 road loss.
Despite being unable to find the back of the net, the Dutch outshot the Defenders 10-7 with six of the shots being on target. Midfielder Teddy Apostolopoulos led the team in shots on goal with three. Central gave freshman goalkeeper Morgan Finkenbinder his first collegiate start and he grabbed two saves.
The Dutch return to the field Wednesday to host Augustana (Ill.) at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex soccer field at 5 pm.
Central Women’s Soccer Team Grabs Win Behind Freshman Goalkeeper
Freshman goalkeeper Josie Farmer snagged five saves and recorded a shutout in her first collegiate appearance as the Central women’s soccer team defeated Hamline University 3-0 on Saturday.
Farmer’s clean slate was the team’s third shutout in their first six games of the season. The Dutch first found the back of the net in the 13th minute, as Amber Santana took advantage of Alli Seegers’s assist for her second goal of the season. In the second half Central added to their lead, when Grace Coates took the ball from midfield to the net and scored her fourth goal of the season. The Dutch weren’t done scoring when Coates found Piper Eighmy for her first career goal.
Central is next in action in Fulton, Missouri on Tuesday to take on Westminster (Mo.) at 5 p.m.
Stout, Pfantz Pace Dutch Women’s Golf Team in Illinois
A pair of Central College women’s golfers are in the top 20 in a field of 124 golfers at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic after Saturday’s first round.
As a team, the Dutch recorded a total of 319 and is in 12th place on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course. Parker Stout led Central with a first round 75 and is tied for 15th. Freshman Allie Pfantz was one stroke behind Stout with a 76 and is tied for 19th place. Jaden Smith carded an 82 and is tied for 55th, while Mickey Martens recorded an 86 to finish the first round tied for 79th. The tournament allows six-player lineups and Amber Timmer and is in a tie for 85th after shooting an 87, while Lydia Grond is tied for 91st after shooting an 88.
Day two of the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic concludes on Sunday.
