The Pella Police Department removed a student from class after the Pella School District became aware of a possible threat made by the juvenile earlier today.

Superintendent Greg Ebeling says a Pella High School staff member was made aware of a potential verbal threat made towards the school. The Pella Police Department was immediately notified and initiated an investigation, which involved a coordinated effort with high school administration. The student who allegedly made the verbal threat was immediately removed from their class. The minor’s parents/guardians were contacted and the student was removed from the school grounds by law enforcement.

Captain Paul Haase reminds parents to have their children stay vigilant and understand the consequences of making threats toward classmates or schools.

“We just really encourage you to have that conversation with your child,” he says. “As the school year goes on, talk to your kids about what they hear and what is going on, and also talk to them about how these threats are taken seriously.”

The juvenile has been charged with Threat of Terrorism under Iowa Code 708A.5, harassment, and carrying a dangerous weapon by a minor as he was found to be in possession of a homemade throwing star. The student was taken into custody by police officers and transported to juvenile detention.
