The Newton Girls and Boys Cross Country teams host the Steve McDermott Invitational tonight at Maytag Park. McDermott was a former Superintendent for the Newton School District and strong supporter of the sport. At least eight other schools including Knoxville, Grinnell, and Marshalltown are scheduled to participate. Newton’s Cross Country teams last competed one week ago at the Oskaloosa Cross Country meet in Edmundson Park. The Cardinal boys placed 4th behind Carlisle, Oskaloosa, and Knoxville. Senior Javin Dolan was just under 17:50 for 6th place while Junior Lance Zaabel was 9th with a time slightly above 18:00. The Newton Girls placed 8th,  with Freshman Audrey Muckler finished 8th individually as well, with a time of just under 22 minutes. The girls run first tonight at 5 p.m. followed by the boys at 5:30 p.m..
