A Knoxville man has been arrested for felony theft after allegedly stealing a vehicle.
According to court records, on September 15th, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen vehicle from 316 SW 1st Street in Melcher and the vehicle was believed to be taken in the early morning hours of September 15th. The victim did not have any leads on who would have taken it. On September 23rd, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was notified that the Pella Police Department had located the stolen vehicle at 205 Oskaloosa Street, unoccupied. During the investigation ,20-year-old August Cawley was identified by police to be allegedly in possession of the stolen vehicle.
When Knoxville officers went to apprehend him, it was for a car burglary that happened the evening before and he was at the apartment of a friend. Cawley did not live there. Police say he was not cooperative. While inside the third-story apartment, he was given an order to turn around and put his arms behind his back. Cawley opened an exterior window and a struggle ensued while officers attempted to keep him from jumping out the third-story window. Cawley fell from the window and was able to get up and flee from law enforcement. After the struggle ,an officer observed that his left hand was red and tender to the touch coupled with swelling. Cawley is charged with Theft Second Degree, a Class D Felony, and Interference with Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury.
Cawley pleaded guilty in July to Second Degree Criminal Mischief from a different incident, in which he received a deferred judgment. Cawley then received a probation violation for the most recent incident and is being held in the Marion County Jail.
