Explosive plays and timely stops on defense fueled the 10th ranked Newton Cardinals and their first-ever win over Bondurant-Farrar in the Class 4A District four opener heard live on KRLS3 Friday night in a 49-28 victory.

Caden Klein turned on the jets and showed off his impressive array of skills, which included an opening drive touchdown after a big pass play to Cade Bauer in the first quarter. From there, Klein scored on plays of 75 yards and 82 yards on the ground before the halftime break. His back-breaking score came on a 4th and 2 in Bondurant-Farrar territory that ultimately iced the game, one of six total touchdowns for the junior.

Equally important was the “bend-but-don’t-break” work of the Cardinals defense, who prevented the Bluejays from scoring on four total occasions backed up in their own redzone, including a pair of fourth down stops.

Klein finished with 257 yards rushing and added a kick return score on an onside kick attempt. Newton improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the district, and will head to Central College next Friday for a big showdown with the #4 in 4A Pella Dutch.
