A Newton man has been given a suspended five-year prison term and three years of probation for driving 50-to-60 mph through the westside of Newton during a police chase. Jacob Charles Fry pleaded guilty to Eluding Over 25 mph Above the Speed Limit, a Class D felony. Court documents show his sentence from District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda also includes a $1,025 civil penalty and orders to undergo substance abuse and psychological evaluations and treatment. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department says the 27-year-old Fry was taken into custody the morning of March 29th of this year. That’s when he reportedly refused to stop for marked patrol cars at the Highway 14 and Interstate 80 eastbound on/off ramp. The arrest report notes the excessive speeding above the 25 mph speed limit occurred on Newton’s West 12th Street South.
