As part of their homecoming festivities this week, a group of Central College students spent their annual Service Day assisting the American Legion Van Veen-Van Hemert Post 89 in adding 74 concrete flag pole mounts at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella on Wednesday. 

The additional mounts will nearly double the total number of flags that will be displayed in the new Avenue of Flags at the cemetery. Central College senior Aidan Buske said that it was a privilege to help with a cause that has special meaning to him and his family. 

“I’d have to say it’s honestly an honor. I had a grandfather who helped out in the Legion, and this just made me think of him. He passed in about 2018, so doing this made me feel like I was doing something that he’d be proud of and I just love being out here and working with these guys.”

The new Avenue of Flags at Oakwood Cemetery will debut on Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th.
