A Knoxville man has been arrested for alleged felony car theft and burglary.

According to court records, on September 6th, a person later identified as 20-year-old August Cawley, can be seen on security camera footage opening unlocked car doors in an apartment complex parking lot and getting into vehicles. Cawley was accompanied by two other people. After Cawley was allegedly finished getting into vehicles, all three people walked westbound on Douglas St. at approximately 1:16 am. Police say camera footage shows Cawley entering an unlocked, parked, and unoccupied motor vehicle parked in a residential driveway. Cawley is observed turning the car on using a key that had been left in the vehicle and leaves the scene in the vehicle.

The vehicle was later located by the Des Moines Police Department and it suffered disabling damage. The vehicle was estimated at a value of just over $3,900. Cawley is charged with Theft Second Degree which is a Class D Felony, and Burglary Third Degree which is an aggravated misdemeanor. Cawley was arrested in September for another incident of vehicle theft and in July pleaded guilty to a criminal mischief charge.
