A special season may be building to even bigger heights for the green and white after the #5 in 4A Dutch football team knocked off the top-ranked team on BcMoore, defeating Newton 35-28 as heard live on the KRLS2 stream on Friday night.

The Dutch scored twice after finding defensive stops against Newton in the first quarter. Pella forced three Cardinals turnovers in the contest, including two first half interceptions.

Pella built a 27-7 lead by halftime behind four Colin Kerndt touchdowns — three of which went to Tyson Barnes and another was on the ground. As Newton was trying to push to score to one possession in the third quarter, Ty Van Vliet forced a critical Caden Klein fumble in the redzone, after which the Dutch would march 82 yards on 18 plays in over eight minutes.

Newton would score twice but ran out of chances in the 4th quarter. Barnes finished with nine catches and 168 yards; Kerndt passed for 224 yards and rushed for 75. Qhjuan Coley scored all four times for the road team.

Pella moves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the district; the Dutch return to action on Thursday at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines against Hoover.
