Central Women’s Tennis Falls in American Rivers Conference Finale

The Central College women’s tennis team finished their conference slate Saturday, falling to Coe College 5-2 to take third in the American Rivers Conference.

Coe swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Dutch got their first point of the match from Lauren Gano, who took care of business at #5 singles with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win. Emily Blom won her fifth straight singles match earning a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6.

Although the team portion of the fall season is over, Central hosts the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships this Friday and Saturday at the Pella and Pella Christian High School tennis courts and the H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.

Dutch Open in Second in League Women’s Golf Tourney

Combating stiff winds, the Central College women’s golf team opened in second place at the American Rivers Conference tournament on Saturday.

Competing at the par-72 Ames Country Club, the Dutch shot 335, trailing the defending champions of the University of Dubuque by 11 shots. Two-time all-conference honoree Lydia Grond stands in seventh place with an 82 in the first round of the 54-hole tourney. Freshman Allie Pfantz is tied for ninth with an 84, Parker Stout is tied for 11th at 85, and Amber Timmer and Mickey Martens are part of a six-way tie for 18th at 88.

The winds are expected to ease only slightly today as the Dutch tee off for round two.

Central Women’s Soccer Shut Out by Dubuque

Facing a stout defense, the Central College women’s soccer team was shut out in a 1-0 loss against the University of Dubuque on Saturday.

The Dutch were held to only one corner kick in the match and were only able to fire five shots on goal. Grace Coates led the team in that category with two shots on target. The Spartans took advantage of a Dutch lapse on defense in the 28th minute, finding the back of the net for the game’s only score. Goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore was strong in goal, grabbing five saves.

Central will look to rebound on Wednesday, traveling to Storm Lake to square off with Buena Vista University at 5 pm.

Underclassmen Lead Central Men’s Soccer Team in Win

After earning a draw in their first conference match, the Central College men’s soccer team rebounded by getting a 2-1 win on the road against the University of Dubuque on Saturday.

The Dutch opened the scoring in the 20th minute, when midfielder Josh Wilson put a bouncing ball into the net for his first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy saved all four of the shots he faced, with the Spartans lone score coming while he was out with an injury. Murphy returned to start the second half. Central got a great run from Austin Bone in the 38th minute, as his first assist of the season found Lelong Miyeng for his first career goal and the eventual game-winner.

The Dutch return to the field Wednesday, when they hit the road to take on Buena Vista at 7:30 pm.
