The Newton Cardinal Football team took another step towards a possible playofff spot last night with a 45-11 win over Carlisle, as heard live on the KRLS3 stream. Four of the Cardinals’ six touchdowns came on plays over 50 yards, and all six scores involved Quarterback Caden Klein. Klein scored on runs of 80, 57, and 52 yards. He also had an 18 yard score and threw two touchdowns that covered 70 and 16 yards. The Cardinals had over 550 yards of total offense, 337 on the ground and 218 through the air. Newton led Carlisle 28-11 at the half. Newton Coach Andy Swedenhjelm expects a very similar game next Friday against Gilbert after a physical contest with the Wildcats.

“They are going to be kind of similar in philosophy as Carlisle. They are going to run it right at you. They are not going to try and hide stuff. They will try to run it down your throat or pitch it outside. Our guys have to be ready for a physical match-up.”

On the night, the Wildcats had over 350 yards of offense. Over 230 yards were from their running game. Carlisle is now 0-7. Newton improves to 5-2 overall and travels to Gilbert next Friday night.

After losing to Bondurant-Farrar last night, Gilbert is 6-1. Kickoff for next Friday’s game is 7:30 p.m. with the pregame at 7:00 p.m. on kniakrls.com Stream3.
