Early Lead Dissipates in Central Volleyball Team Defeat

After winning the first two sets handily, the Central College volleyball team lost 18-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-7 at the University of Dubuque Friday night.

Central (14-6, 1-1 American Rivers Conference) was in control for nearly the entirety of the first two sets against the Spartans before going cold to lose the last three. Outside hitter Gracie Pierson had a season-high 16 kills to lead the Dutch, while right side hitter Kaitlyn Koel also reached double-digit kills with 10. Colleen Kenney nearly matched her season-best with 28 digs, and Pierson added 13 digs to post a double-double. Makayla Ribble led the Dutch with 18 assists and Kaitlyn Mumm had five blocks.

Central is back in action in Dubuque today at 11 am at Loras College.

Central Women’s Tennis Has Successful First Day at American Rivers Conference Individual Championships

Four Central College women’s tennis entries reach the semifinals at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships on Friday.

In the B-Flight of doubles, the #4 seed Becca Vala and Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney started off defeating a duo from Wartburg College 6-3. In the second round they defeated a team from Simpson College 6-1, and will next face the #2 seed from Loras in the semifinals.

The Dutch also had a doubles team from the C-flight make the semifinals. Abbie Den Adel and Emily Blom were seeded #2 in the flight and started out with a 6-1 win against a duo from Coe College. They also defeated a team from Luther College 6-4 in the second round, and advanced to face the #3 seed in the flight from Wartburg.

Blom also advanced to the semifinals in the C-flight of singles action. After a first-round bye she defeated Kendall Olson from Wartburg 5-3, 2-4, 10-5, then defeated teammate Taylor Wyeth in the quarterfinals 4-0, 4-2. In the semifinals, she will face Brooke Bloom from Wartburg.

The final entry to make the semifinals was the #3 seed in the D-Flight of singles Ava Lucas. After a first-round bye, she defeated Isabella Castle 4-1, 1-4, 10-7 in the second round and Cate Bright from Luther 4-2, 1-4, 10-7. Lucas will face the #5 seed from Wartburg Kylie Flowers in the semifinals.

 

The tournament concludes today with the semifinals, finals and consolation matches.
