The Newton Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are going into today’s Little Hawkeye Conference Conference Meet at Maytag Park with “realistic” expectations.  Boys Coach Steve Weeks and Girls Coach Rachelle Tipton both acknowledge the conference is stacked with good runners and teams. Coach Weeks notes every other boys conference opponent is ranked in their respective class except the Cardinals.

“Indianola, Norwalk, and Dallas Center Grimes are all ranked 4A programs. Pella is the second best 3A team in the state. Last I checked, Oskaloosa is ranked in the top 20. Pella Christian is ranked in 2A.”

For the girls, Coach Tipton says the competition is also very tough.

“The thing with our conference is it’s really good. We could get last. But we do have the potential to beat Norwalk or Oskaloosa. So that is what our goal is going to be.”

The Little Hawkeye Conference Girls Meet is to begin at 5:00 p.m. at Newton’s Maytag Park, followed by the Boys Conference Meet at 5:30 p.m.
