The Newton Fire Department is getting an upgraded Vehicle Exhaust Removal System for free. The purchase and Installation is being covered by a grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grant will reimburse the City for the $45,490 expense. The system removes vehicle exhaust from the fire apparatus and ambulance bays.  Vehicle exhaust in buildings has been proven to cause cancer without proper ventilation or removal. Newton City staff says the current system has been in place for about 15 years, and has normal wear and tear that causes maintenance issues and escalating operating costs. The Newton Fire Department applied for this Assistance to Firefighters Grant this past spring. In August, the Department was notified the project was being funded. The City Council approved the low $45,490.00 quote from Air Cleaning Technologies, Inc. of Bonner Springs, Kansas.
