Enrollment in the three week summer school program hosted by the Newton School District reached 101 Jumpstart through 4th grade students this year. Summer School Administrator and Instructional Coach at Woodrow Wilson Elementary Jen Elbert  provided the school board a recap of the program this week. She noted that one session was held at Emerson Hough Elementary this year, from June 10th to July 3rd.

“We always have a wide range of abilities at summer school because we open it up to everybody. We covered reading, writing, and math. We were very intentional about introducing skills for the next grade level, giving students a little pre-teaching if you will.”

According to Elbert, just 15 of the 101 students attended every day of summer school. She wishes that number was higher.

“We have a limited number of spots. So when you sign up your child you need to make that commitment because other students are not getting that opportunity.

Elbert says there were three jump start classes and two 2nd grade classes. Kindergarten, 1st, and a combined 3rd and 4th grade each had one class.
