State Auditor Rob Sand held a town hall in Indianola on Monday, part of his 100 Town Hall tour that visits each of Iowa’s 99 counties. The town hall included discussions centered around the PIE (Public Innovation and Efficiency) Program, education requirements for government jobs, the restrictions on the auditor’s office by the Iowa Legislature, and the Educational Savings Account bill for school vouchers.
Sand tells KNIA News the school vouchers have been the most asked question from attendees at town halls around the state.
“I was asked specifically about accountability for the money? The bottom answer truthfully, is this law prevents private schools from doing almost nothing with your tax dollars. They can’t pay a rebate to parents who send their kids there, but anything else they want to do with your tax dollars is legal under this law. And I don’t know how we would find out about it because we aren’t allowed to audit them. So to me, that total lack of accountability makes this law a real risk for misuse of tax funds.”
