The City of Newton Utilities Department will be flushing hydrants today and Saturday. Hydrants north of 1st Avenue will be flushed today, while hydrants south of 1st Avenue will be flushed Saturday. 

Hydrant flushing is done to clear water mains of internal corrosion and residue, which naturally builds up over time. While water service will not be interrupted, customers may experience a temporary drop in water pressure or slight discoloration. If discoloration occurs, residents are advised to run the cold-water tap until it clears. Avoid using hot water or doing laundry until the cold water runs clear. Only Hydrants with the highest flow and on dead ends will be flushed.
