The Newton City Council has set the fees for the new city-owned Animal Control Services that are now projected to start around March of next year. Newton Police Captain Chris Wing says the fees will assist in offsetting the operational costs of the facility, and were established after researching the fees at other shelters and cities across the state. The daily boarding fee for each night a dog stays in the facility is $20. The first time impounding cost for a licensed dog is $50 and $75 for an unlicensed dog. A second offense for either a licensed or unlicensed dog is $100, with a third offense $150. Newton Mayor Evelyn George says the fees make owners of stray dogs help pay for the service, and hopefully encourage them to be more responsible. The city is working to take over animal control services from Parkview Animal Hospital in Newton. Parkview terminated their agreement with the City effective October 15th, but is continuing their service on a non-contractual basis until the end of the year.
