Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Everyone is reminded to set their clocks back one hour to standard time. Fire officials say that this occasion is a good time for all residents to check safety equipment in their home, by replacing all batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, inspecting fire extinguishers, and updating old alarms if they have expired. Newton Fire Marshall Jacob Halferty recommends that rather than replacing the batteries in your smoke alarms every few months, you use an different form of detector.
“I always recommend people get ten year sealed battery smoke alarms. That way you don’t have to change the battery. When the detector goes bad in ten years you just replace it. No getting up there every six months to replace the batteries.”
Fire Marshall Halferty also recommends every household have at least two five pound ABC fire extinguishers. He suggests placing one in the kitchen and one in the garage.
