Today’s general election will likely finish with definite results in Iowa — but not necessarily for the entire national picture.
Professor of Political Science Andrew Green says not to expect the backlogs of 2020, but to also not be surprised if certain races are called until later this week due to the potential for large turnout and the close nature of the polling.
Green stresses that this is not due to interference — this is just the nature of counting all of the ballots, and even in previous elections where the President, Senate, and House have been called on election night, the total votes weren’t actually certified until later in November.
“I think the other piece that we need to talk about is the role of litigation. and you know there have been an awful lot of lawsuits that have been filed in the lead up to the this week’s election, which I think foreshadows the fact that there are going to be a number of legal challenges that will be put in front of both state courts and and federal courts in the aftermath the election, which then prolongs the certification process down the road,” he says.
