The Central RED Society will welcome senior lecturer of history at Central College Mark Barloon on Monday, November 18th.
The cost for the event is $20, with dinner being served at 5:30 pm, and the program to follow at 6 p.m. in the Boat, Moore and Weller Rooms in the Maytag Student Center. Barloon will dive deep into the history of “Saipan: D-Day in the Pacific.” On June 15th, 1944, nine days after the Allied landings in the Normandy region of France, U.S. Marines stormed the beaches of the strategically significant Japanese island of Saipan. Barloon was born in northeast Iowa and raised on a family-owned hog farm. After high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Iowa State University, a Master of Science from the University of Iowa and his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of North Texas. Barloon spent several years working as an intelligence officer, before returning to Iowa, where he has taught at Central for more than 20 years.
Those interested in attending the event need to register by Monday and a link to register can be found here. For more information about the program, contact Central College Director of Engagement Mary Benedict at benedictm@central.edu or by phone at 641-628-7641.
