A pair of Central College athletes received American Rivers Conference performer of the week recognition for the first time on Monday.

Dutch senior libero Gwen Kahlke was named the league’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the week. Kahlke was forced into the lineup due to an injury, and in her first start of the season had 35 digs to go with seven assists and a service ace in a 3-1 conference victory at Buena Vista on Thursday. The win lifted the Dutch into a three-way tie for third place and gave them the No. 4 seed in the six-team conference tournament. Central hosts Wartburg College in the first round of the tourney today at 7 pm at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

Sophomore Carter Martinson was the other Dutch athlete to receive league honors, claiming the conference’s men’s wrestler of the week. Making his debut for Central, Martinson won the 157-pound title at the Millikin (Ill.) Open on Saturday. A University of Iowa transfer, Martinson posted a 5-0 mark on the day with two technical falls in the 19-team tourney. The Dutch men’s wrestling team opens its dual schedule with a conference match at Coe College at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.
