Assistant Principal of Pella High School Derek Schulte has been named the 2024-25 Iowa Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year by School Administrators of Iowa (SAI).
“Selected by a group of his peers, Derek stands out as a dedicated leader whose influence and efforts have made a lasting, positive impact. He is truly deserving of the Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year award, and we are honored to recognize his achievements and contributions to education.” said SAI Executive Director Dr. Lisa Remy.
Schulte taught for both Southeast Polk and Montezuma Community School Districts before accepting the Secondary Assistant Principal role with Pella in 2018. Schulte also serves as the high school boys’ head basketball coach, leading the Dutch to a state title in 2021.
Schulte’s education background is extensive. He attended Iowa State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Business-Marketing, He then graduated from Coe College after obtaining certifications in Secondary Business Education and Business/Marketing Management. He also received a Master of Arts degree in teaching while at Coe. He then attended Drake University for his Master of Science in Education and administrative certification and licensure.
Fort Dodge High School Assistant Principal Adam Kent was part of the selection committee and noted his appreciation of Schulte’s dedication. “Derek conveyed the conviction that we can’t do it alone as an assistant principal. He showed a strong systemic approach to his role that impressed the committee members.” he said.
One reference letter described Schulte’s focus on teamwork. “Derek excels in fostering teamwork and inspiring others to strive for excellence. Derek approaches leading and coaching with a thoughtful and intentional mindset, tailoring strategies to each individual’s strengths and nurturing a collaborative team environment.”
Reflecting on the recognition, Schulte said, “I am honored to receive this award from SAI. I am fortunate to work in a school district and community that values both education and continuous improvement. This award reflects the collaboration with an excellent Pella High School staff and leadership team. Thank you to SAI for the continued support and professional development opportunities provided to school leaders.”
Iowa’s Administrator of the Year award recipients will be honored at SAI’s 50th Annual Conference in August 2025.
