Central Women’s Basketball Fights Back for Overtime Win

Trailing by eight going into the fourth quarter, the Central College women’s basketball team came back to draw even at the end of regulation and finished the 74-72 win against Grinnell College in overtime.

Guard Abby Johnson led the Dutch with 18 points shooting 6-13 from the field, and 4-6 from behind the three-point line. Forward CeCe Moore scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and blocked four shots. Emily Naughton added 11 points and dished out six assists, while collecting three steals and a blocked shot. Off the bench, Jasmyn Williams scored eight points, had four assists, three rebounds, one block and one steal. As a team Central shot 38.6% from the field, 29.6% from three-point range and 12-14 from the free throw line.

The Dutch have a busy weekend, starting Friday with a home game against Northland College (Wis.) at 5 p.m. in the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

Coe Defeats Central in First Men’s Wrestling Dual

Facing a lineup with five wrestlers ranked in the NWCA Division III preseason poll, the Central College men’s wrestling team dropped its season opener 26-9 at Coe College Wednesday night. It was also the first dual under new Dutch head coach Landon Williams. Central’s three wins came from the heart of its lineup. Pierre Baldwin hung on to a 3-2 win at 141 pounds, Carter Martinson defeated #14 Ty Koedam 16-12 at 157 pounds, and Carson Martinson secured an 11-4 decision at 165 pounds.  The Dutch will bring a contingent of wrestlers to the Augsburg Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday.
