The PCM football team will face off against Spirit Lake today at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls in the Class 2A semifinals.

The Mustangs are a perfect 11-0 on the season and are coming off a commanding 41-0 win over Mid-Prairie last week in the state quarterfinals. The 10-1 Indians have also put together an impressive season and defeated North Fayette Valley 42-13 in their quarterfinal game last week. PCM has outscored their opponents by a substantial margin all season with their closest game being a 22 point win. The story is similar for the Indians who have won ten straight after losing their first game of the season by two points to Algona.

Today’s game will be a story of a great running game against a great passing game. The Mustangs have rushed for 3,011 yards this year compared with the 1,725 of Spirit Lake while the Indians have thrown for 2,176 yards compared with the 1,653 of PCM. The Mustangs continue to be led by the two headed offensive monster of quarterback Gavin Van Gorp and running back Adrien Robbins while the Indians will look to talented quarterback Caden Lundt who has thrown for 34 touchdowns this season. PCM will need to be prepared for wide receivers Dylan and Ethan Stecker who have combined for 80 receptions and over 1,400 receiving yards this season.

However, the Mustangs continue to be dominant up front as they have one of the best offensive lines in the state along with a stout defensive front in which many teams have not had much success running the ball on this season. It will be two heavy hitters squaring off in a prize fight today with a trip to the state title on the line. PCM Coach Greg Bonnett says he isn’t looking for the journey to end today.

“It’s been a fun year anyway, and what they’ve done has been very impressive, but like we’ve been saying all year, we want a little bit more than where we’re at right now. We don’t want to just be a team that goes to the dome, we want to get out of there with a state title.”

Today’s game will start at 10:00 am and can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS with Clayton Sampson and Colin Halfpap on the call.
