A non-profit that has been helping needy Jasper County children and families at Christmas for decades is looking for people to help them do that again this year. Jessica Lowe-Vokes is the President of St. Nick’s Christmas Club. She says the organization has been around since 1988, when it assisted about 20 families. This year, Lowe-Vokes expects to serve about 300 Jasper County children and their families.
“St. Nick’s is dedicated to giving each child a new outfit so that they have that to go back to school with. We also make sure they get an item off their wish list.”
Families accepted into St. Nick’s Christmas Club are also given food cards in an amount based on the number of children they have. Last year, Lowe-Vokes says they gave out about $10,000 in food cards. Anyone who would like to adopt a child and shop for that child’s outfit and wish list item can look through the adoption book at the Newton YMCA. Donations can also be sent to St. Nick’s Christmas Club, P.O. Box 162, Newton, Iowa 50208. Jessica Lowe-Vokes talks more about St. Nick’s Christmas Club on today’s Let’s Talk Newton.
