The Simpson women’s basketball continued a streak that dates back to 2003 Tuesday evening, defeating the Central College Dutch 95-87 for their 46th straight victory over their rivals as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm and Dutch women battled back and forth in the first quarter, with both teams shooting well from outside and Simpson clinging to a slim 22-21 lead, only to see the lead balloon in the second quarter to lead 50-40 at the halftime break. The lead got as high as 15 in the third quarter, but Central would not go away easily and made multiple runs using strong shooting from outside to get the lead down to five with five minutes left to go in the contest, but the Storm closed it out shooting 18-23 from the free throw line.
Storm assistant coach Claire Urias tells KNIA Sports the Storm were able to maintain their composure to win, but the message in the locker room was they need to improve on defense if they want to continue to win.
CeCe Moore led Central with 21 points, while Kaitlyn Mumm scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds off the bench. Molly Lutmer scored a career high 28 points to lead Simpson, while Haley Rasmussen scored 16.
Central is now 5-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, and will play Buena Vista at home next Wednesday. Simpson is now 3-2 and 1-0, and will play in a tournament in LaCrosse, Wisconsin this weekend.
