It is the time of year where snow will start to fall in Knoxville and Marion County and there are snow ordinances that need to be followed.

The Knoxville Snow Ordinance is designed to allow city crews to more easily plow streets. It makes it illegal to park any vehicle on any city street when it is in effect. Vehicles found on the street may be cited ($25 fine) and/or towed. The Knoxville Snow Ordinance generally goes into effect any time the forecast calls for one inch or more of snow. Once declared, the Knoxville Snow Ordinance stays in effect until the storm ends and the street has been plowed from curb to curb or 24 hours has passed. 

For the county, the ordinance states that snow from private drives shall not be placed on the roadway or shoulders, it is not the policy of the county to sand and salt roads that are slick, slippery, or dangerous due to the formation of frost, so drivers should use extreme caution when frost could be present, and drivers are encouraged to reduce speed to the appropriate speed for the conditions of the road. The county also wants citizens to know that motor graders and snow plows will not be in operation after 8:00 PM and not begin before 4:00 AM.  If conditions are too hazardous, snow removal operations may be suspended until the County Engineer deems it safe to resume.  Roads may only have one lane plowed for a period of time.  After all roads have been opened to two-lane travel, snow removal will only be carried out during normal working hours. 

The county will not replace mailboxes damaged or knocked down by the force of the snow thrown from the plow. To see the complete county snow ordinance you can follow this link.
