Newton boys swimming Coach Lucas Warner is in his second year leading the program. Warner took over the program, after spending a season as an assistant coach under former head coach Sarah Patterson. Warner is coaching over 20 swimmers this year, and says the team’s experience ranges from new swimmers to a returning State Champion and State Qualifiers. Despite varying levels of experience for each swimmer, Warner says his goal is for each of them to have fun and get faster.
“That’s like the core of what I want them to see. I just want everyone to get better. And it takes a lot of time to see that progress. So I want them to have fun in the moment because they might not see that time drop right away. But by the end of the season they will start seeing themselves get faster and faster.”
Newton’s returning State Champion is junior Finn Martin. He won the 50-yard freestyle last season. State qualifiers Ethan Comer, Mack Copeland and Caleb Punt are also back this year.
The Cardinals’ boys swimming team will host a triangular with Boone and Des Moines East at the Newton YMCA Tuesday December 10th, 2024.
