In a tightly-contested battle featuring 11 ties and 17 lead changes, the Simpson College women’s basketball team narrowly fell 73-66 to Coe in American Rivers Conference action.
Neither team led by more than three points until a 3-point basket by Kelly Knight gave Coe (7-1, 2-0 A-R-C) a 40-36 edge with just over 15 minutes left in the second half. Back-and-forth action continued through the end of the period, with the Kohawks clinging to a 51-48 advantage going into the fourth.
Simpson (3-5, 1-1 A-R-C) came out strong in the fourth quarter, using a 10-4 run to grab a 58-57 lead with 5:08 remaining. However, the Kohawks responded with a decisive 12-1 run powered by clutch triples from Ellie Wisner and Caydee Kirkham for a 67-59 advantage. Coe went 6-for-6 at the line in the final minute, ending the contest a perfect 16-for-16 in free throws.
The Storm (1-5, 0-1 A-R-C) travelled to Cedar Rapids tonight to face off against A-R-C opponent Coe College (3-3, 0-1 A-R-C). In Simpson’s second conference matchup, the Storm fell to the Kohawks with a score of 79-51.
Though only six three-pointers were scored tonight amongst both teams, the Kohawks were able to surpass the Storm near the basket with 40 of their points coming from the paint. Simpson led the Kohawks in offensive rebounds and only came up one short in total rebounds.
The team was led by freshman Colton Rasmussen with 11 points while also tacking on four rebounds for the Storm. Senior Matt Schubert led the team in rebounds with seven.
