The Knoxville School Board has not received a petition to force a special election after the resignation of board member Dave Smith, so the board will look to appoint someone at their meeting on Monday.

KCSD Business Manager Craig Mobley confirms that no petition has been received and that two people have contacted him interested in filling the vacancy. This is the second vacancy the board has had to fill since the last school board election in November of 2023. When former board member Susan Swartzedruber resigned in May, her seat was filled by a special election, which cost the district just under $15,000. If the board is unable to fill the vacancy by appointment in 30 days, there will be a special election held in February. Monday’s school board meeting is the only meeting scheduled in that 30-day window, so if no appointment is made Monday, the board will have to schedule a special meeting.
