School Resource Officer Cody Nichol has been recognized as the Knoxville Police Officer of the year.
Nichol took over as SRO in 2023. To make himself a more qualified Police Officer and School Resource Officer, Officer Nichol attended the National Association of School Resource Officers Basic SRO Course, National Association of School Resource Officers Advanced SRO Course, Standard Response Protocol Instructor School, and Crisis Intervention Training. Officer Nichol is a member of the National Association of School Resource Officers and the Iowa Association of School Resource Officers.
Along with other community partners, Officer Nichol helped plan and participated in the annual Helmets & Hotdogs event. Officer Nichol also represents the community and the Knoxville Police Department as a member of the Marion County Coalition for Suicide Prevention. Providing guidance and sharing his knowledge with fellow police officers, Officer Nichol serves the police department as a Standard Field Sobriety Test Instructor, Field Training Officer and Firearms Instructor.
A social media post by the department states that “Officer Nichol is a true leader within our police department, whose work behind the scenes cannot be quantified but is fundamental to the daily operations of the police department, and is appreciated by all department members.” The post adds that “Officer Nichol’s performance throughout the year reflects his dedication to the profession of policing and his commitment as the School Resource Officer. Officer Nichol exemplifies the best of the department and is a testament to the values of the Knoxville Police Department: Service, Integrity, Knowledge, and Pride.”
