Newton Police are investigating several reports of fraudulent credit card transactions in what appears to be a resurgence in suspected skimming activity. During the last few weeks, Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess says the department has seen an increase in reports from residents of fraudulent credit card transactions on their accounts after purchasing gas at Git N Go at 801 1st Avenue West.
This past summer, Newton Police investigated multiple reports of fraudulent card transactions from people who purchased gas and Git N Go. That investigation, conducted with the assistance of the Iowa Department of Agriculture, found no skimming devices on the pumps victims had reported using. But evidence of tampering was found at two other fuel pump locations in Newton.
With this recent increase in fraudulent credit card transactions, the Newton Police Department has contacted the Iowa Department of Agriculture to assist in this new investigation. Police Chief Burdess says management at Git N Go is also aware of the situation. He encourages anyone who has purchased gas at this location to monitor their financial transactions and contact their bank and law enforcement immediately if suspicious activity is found.
