Pella Girls Wrestling Returns to Competition, Places 12th
Pella’s girls wrestling team finished 12th of 27 as a team and had five individuals place at the deep Ogden tournament Saturday.
Head Coach Adam Hale:
“Of the five placers, four were freshmen, and in a tournament like this, earning that spot in the top 8 is a really nice accomplishment. I loved seeing how Kenadi Montgomery competed today; she seemed a lot looser, free, and aggressive with her wrestling. It was the best we’ve seen her all season for sure. Jenna VanWyk dropped a couple tough matches but wrestled really well all day, she always does such a great job of fighting through every position. Danica Van Baale showed what can happen when you go out and wrestle hard, it’s great seeing how aggressive she is, and she did a good job of making some small adjustments throughout the day. Emma Smith continues to put together a solid freshman season, she had a couple of really great moments today from the top position where she was flowing really well and doing an excellent job of staying light on her feet. Elizabeth Thomas was our lone, non-freshman to place today. She’s always fun to watch with how quick and explosive she is, but lately she’s been doing an even better job of transitioning from takedowns straight into turns or positions that put her in a good spot to get turns. We had a couple other bright spots today including getting Aspen Kramer her first ever matches. Abbi Lemke also had a match during the second round that I’m really proud of how hard she wrestled which led to her getting a takedown and nearfall with less than 10 seconds left to get the win.”
Pella has three home meets this week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Placewinners:
110 – Jenna VanWyk, 8th place, 1-3, 1 technical fall
120 – Danica VanBaale, 7th place, 4-2, 3 falls
130 – Kenadi Montgomery, 4th place, 3-2, 2 falls
135 – Elizabeth Thomas, 6th place, 3-2, 2 falls, 1 technical fall
145 – Emma Smith, 6th place, 2-3, 1 fall
