The City of Knoxville and Marion County are celebrating five years since acquiring the vacant VA Campus.
The property was obtained through agreements with both state and federal government entities on January 15th, 2020. The campus consists of 153 acres that lie completely inside the corporate city limits of Knoxville. Until five years ago, the campus had been under federal jurisdiction, completely restricting the city’s ability to access or impact the campus in any way. Since acquiring the property, the city has turned the vacant campus into a multi-phase housing development and park for the community to enjoy.
Twenty of the 34 lots in phase one of the project have been sold and two larger housing projects are set for construction in 2025 in the area of the district called Veterans Park. The new Veterans District also saw the addition of a splash pad in May. Over the next 20 years, city leadership wants to see several residential neighborhoods created in the district.
The last remaining building from the old VA Campus that remains is the laundry building. For more information about the Veterans District, visit this link.
