The Norwalk basketball teams swept Oskaloosa on the road Friday night in a doubleheader heard live on the KNIA3 stream.

The Class 4A sixth-ranked Warrior girls overcame a slow start offensively by scoring 45 second-half points and defeating the Indians 66-32. Norwalk finished the game with 12 three-pointers, including eight in the second half, and made 10-of-13 free throws.

Oskaloosa was plagued by turnovers against Norwalk’s trapping pressure defense, but scored the final eight points of the first half to pull within 21-17. The second half was all Warriors as they outscored Osky 25-4 in the third quarter and 20-11 in the fourth.

Sophomore Payton Travis and senior Grace Linder combined for seven three-pointers off the bench, finishing with 12 and nine points, respectively. Freshman Braylyn Birmingham led Norwalk with 19 points, senior Bailey Birmingham added 11 and junior Ava Carlson had eight. Norwalk head coach Joe Sigrist was pleased by the way his team executed their second-half adjustments against Oskaloosa’s active zone defense. The Warriors also collapsed on Osky senior Dasia Foster inside, holding the 6-foot-3 post to a third of her scoring average with six points.

The Norwalk girls improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. They will host 4A 11th-ranked Carlisle on Monday night.

The Warrior boys basketball team led Oskaloosa 48-29 early in the fourth quarter and held on for a 57-50 victory. The three-point shooting of sophomores Tommy North and Tyler Edgar, along with an effective trap and press in the final minutes, allowed the Indians to cut a 19-point deficit down to five. Free throw shooting was a big factor in the final outcome as Norwalk made 12-of-17 attempts and Oskaloosa finished 8-of-21.

The Warriors, who opened the game with a 9-0 run, featured a balanced scoring attack led by Cameron Thomas with 15 points, Kaleb Foltz 11, Mason Johnson 10 and Grady Sigrist nine. North led Oskaloosa with 18.

Following a 2-0 week on the road, Norwalk is 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the Little Hawkeye. They return home for a non-conference game against Ames on Tuesday night.
