Judicial reform may again be considered by the Iowa Legislature this upcoming session, and will be a priority for State Senator Julian Garrett. Garrett tells KNIA News previous changes were made at the state level to allow the Governor to appoint more members for commissions that select judges, and removed a Supreme Court judge from the selection process. Garrett said a topic that came up early this session is judges salary, after a proposal from the Chief Justice to make the salaries 75% of the federal judges salaries.

“My initial reaction, I’m not very enthused about that. It would take it out of the legislature’s hands and would just be a mathematical calculation. I don’t know that the taxpayers want to have their representatives give up all of our control over the judges salaries, that is not the way other salaries are set for other state officials.”

Garrett said he will continue to discuss the issue before coming to a decision on whether to support the proposal. To hear the full interview, click below.
