A five-game losing streak ended for the Pella Christian boys basketball team Tuesday night, as they used a strong second half to run away from Fairfield in a 65-38 non-conference win heard live on the KRLS2 stream at KNIAKRLS.com.
The first half saw both teams struggle on the offensive end of the floor, with the score being tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter and the Eagles holding a narrow 20-16 advantage at halftime. Out of the break, Pella Christian’s remained solid on the defensive end of the floor, but found their rhythm offensively to pull away from the Trojans. In the third quarter, the Eagles outscored Fairfield 24-11 to build up a 44-27 lead, then won the fourth quarter 21-11 to secure the 27-point victory. It was a balanced scoring effort for Pella Christian on the night, with Landon Fransman and Wyatt Snyder leading the way with 14 points, Gilbert Flagel scoring 13 points, Deacon Branderhorst adding nine, and Devan Runner contributing six off the bench. Defensively, Ben Van Wyngarden drew the primary assignment against the Trojans leading scorer Riley Perkins, and held him to just 12 points on 3/15 shooting. Wyatt Snyder said it was a great team effort that helped get the Eagles back into the win column and improve to 5-8 overall on the year.
“We’re all really tight on this team. We all support each other and cheer for each other every time. We don’t really care who’s scoring or whose night it is, we’re all cheering for each other. I know Landon had a really good night, so did Gilbert, Deacon hit a couple of threes, and Ben was playing amazing defense tonight. So it’s really good. We’re a really tight knit group. So like I said, we don’t care who’s doing the scoring or anything, it just matters that we are scoring.”
