The Newton and Indianola basketball teams meet for the second time this season tonight, this time at the home of the Cardinals. The teams split the first games in Indianola on December 6th. The Indianola girls won 53-42, while the Newton boys got a 64-56 overtime victory.

In the girls game, the Cardinals were down six points at the end of the first quarter and trailed 24-14 at halftime. Newton was within two points at the end of the third quarter, but Indianola outscored the Cardinals 21-12 over the final eight minutes of the game. Newton had eight more turnovers than Indianola, and the Indians attempted 11 more free throws and made seven more than the Cardinals. Payton Carkhuff had nine points and Alexis Garvis and Tori White each added eight points for Newton. Madison Grover led Indianola with 17 points.

The boys game was close from start to finish. Newton was up three points after the first quarter, trailed by two at halftime, and was down one point heading into the 4th quarter. The game went into overtime tied at 52, after Indianola missed a last second shot. The Cardinals pulled away in the extra period, scoring 12 points to the Indians four. Newton was 13-29 from the 3-point line while Indianola was 6-25. The Cardinals overcame 13 turnovers, while the Indians had seven. Cade Bauer led Newton with 17 points while Andrew DeWall paced Indianola with 18.
