Central College cornerback Gavin Smith was tabbed for the Division III Academic All-American football first-team as selected by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA). It’s the eighth time in the past nine years that the Dutch football team has had a player chosen. Central has now had athletes receive CSC Academic All-American recognition 81 times, including 22 times in football. Smith is an accounting major with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average. To be eligible for Academic All-American consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity contributor, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better and have reached sophomore standing. On the field, Smith was named a second team All-American by the Associated Press this fall. The junior recorded three interceptions, including a 35-yard pick-six against Simpson College, while also leading the team with 11 pass breakups and made 27 tackles. Additionally, Smith was a third team D3football.com All-Region pick and first team American Rivers All-Conference choice.
