The Newton Police Department has filed felony charges against the person they believe is responsible for two burglaries last year. Forty-two-year-old Matthew Lee Moore of Marshalltown is accused of stealing a safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash from World Liquor and Tobacco back in June, and cash from Newton American Legion Post 111 on Christmas Day. Moore has been charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, a Class D felony. He’s being held in the Tama County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
Newton Police say search warrants executed in Marshalltown produced evidence connecting Moore to the local burglaries, as well as others in Marshalltown and Tama County. Those include break-ins at American Legion Buildings in Darwin and Gladbrook and the Marshalltown VFW. Felony charges have been filed against the Marshalltown man in those cases as well. Authorities add Moore remains under investigation, and additional charges are pending.
