The Knoxville Public Library will host accounting faculty and students from Central College to help residents with their income taxes on Saturday.
The service will be open from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Weiler Room of the library. The assistance is made possible through a grant from the Iowa Center for Economic Success, which Central has received for the past six years. Students will prepare taxes on a volunteer basis under the supervision of Central’s accounting faculty through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance services are open to taxpayers who have less than $79,000 in annual income, live in rural areas, are elderly or have a disability, or have limited English proficiency. Public Library Director Roslin Thompson says this is a service they’ve offered in years past.
“We have some volunteers from Central College and they have done that for us in the past. We have had a lot of interest from people calling on how to file their taxes.”
The IRS began receiving income taxes on Monday, January 27th.
