The Newton girls basketball team will try and keep their season alive tonight with a win at Carlisle in a Class 4A Region 6 Semifinal game. The Wildcats are 17-4 on the season and the two seed in the regional, while the Cardinals are the three seed with a record of 11-11. With the second seed, Carlisle did not have to play a quarterfinal game last Wednesday night, while Newton defeated Boone 41-37 to advance to tonight’s contest. Sophomore guard Payton Carkhuff was the only Cardinal to reach double figures in that win with 13 points. Newton head coach Jake Bennett says his team knows they are not the favorites to win, but they are used to the underdog role.
“Most of the time that I have been here, we’ve been seen as the underdog. So, we are comfortable being in that position and are kind of hungry because of that. Our girls know what that feels like, so they are going to expect a good fight and a tough battle, and we’ll just see what happens from there.”
Tonight’s Class 4A Region 6 Semifinal from Carlisle tips off at 7:00 p.m., and can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream at kniakrls.com, with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 p.m.
