The Knoxville School Board held a Northstar Elementary assessment work session on Monday night.
This helps determine next steps the district will take as they are in process of deciding whether to renovate the current building or build new on land that is reserved in the Veterans District. Representatives from Boyd Jones and Alvine Engineering were present to discuss the Northstar Elementary building assessment that they completed for the district. There will be three different scenarios to consider in regards to the future of Northstar: add classroom and gym additions along with fixing deficiencies, full renovation of the building, or building a new facility. School Business Manager Craig Mobley says the district is now looking at next steps in the process.
“There is just an estimated cost involved with each of those scenarios and you can look at the comparisons of those and then really talking about what are the next steps in this process. What we’re looking at now is trying to get a request for qualifications and proposals from different architect firms to figure out what the architect firm is the board would like to work with for a potential project whether it is a renovation or building new and then after that is in place we would develop a task force to really take a look and dig deep into the entire Northstar Elementary situation.”
The land set aside in the Veterans District was acquired as part of a land swap agreement with the city.
