In their final year competing for the Pella Christian boys and girls basketball teams, two seniors etched their names into the record books on Eagle Lane.
For the Eagles’ girls squad, Faith Kacmarynski made history twice in the second half of the team’s season. In Pella Christian’s 65-34 victory over Knoxville on January 13th, Kacmarynski posted a school-record 11 assists, which paired with 12 points to give the senior her second double-double of the season. Faith’s 11 assist in the game surpassed the Eagles’ previous single game assist mark of 10, which had been held by Jora Vander Hart, Cali Vink, Jana Van Zanten, and Mindi Andringa. In addition to setting the single game assist record, Kacmarynski moved into second place on the Eagles’ all-time assist leaderboard, by becoming just the second player in school history to surpass 300 career assists in a 36-21 win over Newton on February 4th. For her career, Faith finished with 317 total assists while playing in 92 of the 93 total games Pella Christian has played over the last four years.
For the Eagles’ boys team, Deacon Branderhorst put his name into the record books with an electric postseason performance. In Pella Christian’s 72-31 victory over Davis County in the Class 2A District 10 semifinals on February 20th, Branderhorst rained in eight three pointers for a career high 31 points. Deacon’s eight triples in the win tied the senior for the most threes made in a single game, joining brothers Levi and Dan Jungling atop the leaderboard. Levi first set the record in a win over Ballard on January 19th, 2016, while Dan followed that up with two such performances in a win over PCM on December 3rd, 2018 and a victory over Knoxville on January 7th, 2019. In addition to tying the Jungling brothers against Davis County, Deacon also recorded the first 30-point game for Pella Christian boys basketball since March 9th, 2017, when Levi Jungling scored 31 points against Kuemper Catholic in the State Tournament Semifinals. For the season, Branderhorst connected on 56 three pointers while shooting 35.2% from behind the arc.
The Eagle girls finished the season with an 8-15 overall record, while the P.C. boys finished the campaign at 10-14.
